Light Emitting Diode (LED) Light Therapy is a popular treatment, with many clinics offering light therapies exclusively.

Unlike some of its contemporaries, LED treatments were not created for the beauty industry and then proven under scientific scrutiny. Rather, the original idea came from NASA, who were using it as part of plant-based experiments in space and, as a result, recognized the therapeutic benefits, applying their findings in the treatment of major injuries. As a result, it was subject to robust scientific analysis, with a general consensus being that exposure to LED lights at certain wavelengths led to positive and curative outcomes. Aestheticians then recognised the potential application of the healing and rejuvenation properties on the skin, and LED Light Therapy devices started appearing in clinics.

How Does It Work?

LED treatments deliver light to the skin at varying wavelengths and frequencies, depending on the client.

While the wavelength dictates the colour of the light delivered, the colours themselves are used as a reference point.

Blue Light targets the gland beneath the hair follicle. Responsible for the production of oil, the Sebaceous gland is often responsible for acne and other skin conditions. By targeting these glands, the excessive production of oil can be slowed, reducing acne and even minimising scarring to a limited extent.

Red light targets the epidermis, encouraging the production of collagen and making skin appear fuller and plumper. This is not dissimilar to radio-frequency (RF) treatments.

Is It Safe?

LED light therapy is safer than many other popular treatments and its application is straightforward and simple for a clinician to learn. The client lies on a treatment bed, and the light is activated based on the treatment selected. On premium devices, multiple wavelengths can be selected at one time. There is no UV light and so the danger of injury or burning is minimised and multiple treatments can be completed without issue.

What Type Of Clinics Would Benefit?

This is the type of treatment that can be conducted during a lunch hour because there are no post-treatment issues such as redness. Due to the healing benefits of LED, it can also be partnered with more intrusive treatments, such as microdermabrasion. It’s also an ideal cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
